Russian Photografy

Good evening, everybody!
Today I got to know few exciting facts which I think can seem interesting to you too.
This is about russian school of professional photografy. One of my friends here who is a teacher at our photoschool posted few pics lately. What was special about them? That they were shot in the beginning of the XX century, before the revolution, and they were...COLOURED!
Photografer - S. M. Prokudin - Gorsky
1909 year
There definately could not have been any color pics, none, black&white only. How come? I made a small historical research, killed the guy asking questions and here is what I learned.

These amazing pics were made by a famous russian photografer S. M. Prokudin - Gorsky in the XX century. He was a sort of pioneer in the field of color photografy in Russia. Being a talented chemist also, he developed his own methodology of creating such photos. I'll try to explain in simple words)) He took b&w photographic plates, and made 3 same shots, one after another, from the same place, using red, green and blue photo filters. His models had to stand very still - this is why they look so static, if someone moved, he turned out to look green or blue on the final photo. Have a look at a kid hahahh:

And then Gorsky finally combined the three shots using his own technology and as a result there was a color photo, guys! Most of his works have been scanned by U. S. Library of Congress and there can be found.
All this was a real discovery for me'cos I had no idea that one can see Russian Empire before the revolution in color, but now I know that's possible. Here I post few more pics made by Gorsky:
Self - portrait, 1912 year

The Seliger Lake, 1920 year

Church in Smolensk, 1920 year

Karelia, 1916 year
Ahhh, wait, forgot to tell ya that he also made a well - known color portrait of Tolstoy))

That's all, folks!
See you online!
Regards
M
